If you're a fan of hard rock or heavy metal
you'll love this film. Yeah, it scores high on the cheese-o-meter,
but the music definitely makes up for that.

It's basically the story of a singer from a
tribute band landing the once in a life-time dream job and actually
replacing the singer in the real band!!! Mark Wahlberg plays Chris,
the main man who gets to progress from local gigs with his bunch of
"not quite as into it as he is" mates, to falling down the stairs on
the set of his arena debut with the real deal Steel Dragon. Jennifer
Aniston tries hard to break out of her character from Friends as
Chris' manager/love interest, but other than one sleazy scene where
she wakes up in a hotel room with a bunch of people that she doesn't
know, it's standard "Rachel" type stuff for most of the film. |

So, no Oscar nominations for this one, but the
staged gig scenes are awesomely over the top and in your face, while
there are some genuinely comic moments along the way too, even if a
couple are a bit close to similar scenes from This Is Spinal Tap.
The rest of Steel Dragon are made up of Jason
Bonham on Drums (yeah, him that played with Led Zep at the O2), Zakk
Wylde on Guitar (from Ozzy Ozbourne's band…..) and Jeff Pilson on
bass (Dokken). Myles Kennedy, now the singer with Alter Bridge,
shows up at one point too - but I won't spoil the ending of the film
telling you how. Actor Dominic West takes the part as the main
guitar player and Steel Dragon leader - just as well really, as
neither Jason, Zakk or Jeff really cut it as actors, and all they
have to do is play a bunch of metal-heads which is hardly a stretch
now is it…...

There's a decent soundtrack from the likes of
Kiss, Bon Jovi and Ted Nugent etc, but it’s the songs written and
recorded specifically for the film that make it so great, with four
excellent songs even making the soundtrack CD worth a purchase.
If the story sounds a bit familiar, you're right
- it's basically what happened when Tipper Gore replaced Rob Halford
in Judas Priest. Thing is though, without any direct reference,
Priest didn't get a penny from the film, even after a lengthy court
battle. To me this is kinda odd, as the film has literally dozens of
Priest references, starting with the gay front man that bails out.
See how many you can come up with.
