Everybody Loves Mamma Mia! |
|
|

Mamma Mia! has made it 'home' to
Bristol at long last. Catherine Johnson - who wrote the story of
Mamma Mia! and freely admits basing one or two of the characters
on personal friends of hers - lives in Bristol and has written a
number of successful plays before making it BIG
worldwide with a musical featuring ABBA songs written by Benny
Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. And of course ABBA is also a
favourite subject of mine too being a fan of the band since 1974
when they won the Eurovision Song Contest with "Waterloo".
I saw the musical premiere in London
at The Prince Edward Theatre on 6th April 1999 and also met Bjorn
Ulvaeus of ABBA that night at the aftershow party. Of course I
have seen the musical since then and now it's in Bristol and it's
an opportunity I had no intention of missing.

"Mamma Mia!" is not a tribute show, it
is not the ABBA story, but is in fact about a mother, a daughter,
a wedding and three possible dad's set on a sunny Greek island.
And that is where the story unfolds, friends reunited, fun,
heartache, reminiscing and a great soundtrack to a fabulous show.
Don't blame me if you leave the Bristol Hippodrome singing ABBA
songs. The musical just has that effect! |
|
The show opens to a musical medley of
ABBA tunes revealing on stage a lone figure of daughter Sophie
Sheridan played with warmth and enthusiasm by Haley Flaherty who
is in the process of sealing wedding invites and sending them to
three ex-boyfriends of her mothers. Having found her diary Sophie
learns that one of them just maybe her father and the only way to
find out is to invite them to her wedding without her mum knowing!
Of course all three men accept the invitations and arrive on the
island much to the shock and surprise of mother Donna Sheridan who
is played superbly by Carolanne Weidle. Her ability to switch
between a strong independent woman to someone who has buried her
vulnerability only for it to reappear in a chain of events that
she has no real control over is pure genius. |
 |
As for the three possible father's
they are played with great wit, charm and in one or two scenes
with great emotion. A big round of applause Richard Shelton - who
played that nasty Doctor in Emmerdale (I thought he looked
familiar!) - in the role of Harry 'Headbanger' Bright, Damian
Myerscough as Bill Austin and Cameron Blakely who takes the
role Sam Carmichael. The interaction between these three actors is
so tight, but great fun.
|
The script of the musical is fast and
free flowing that you don't see the joins. It's witty, it's funny,
it's emotional, it's happy and sad and it's all captured rather
nicely in this one complete package that many writers can only
dream of. Catherine Johnson has achieved that dream and more
besides.
I love the character Tanya. She's
feisty, flirty, a man-eater who got through three husbands and is
looking for husband number four. Anita Booth is just so
entertaining I am sure she would have had one or two men in the
audience quaking in their boots. And as for the role of Rosie
played by Felicity Duncan she is so funny and reminds me a bit
comedy wise of the Dawn French characters. She has a brilliant
scene at the church with Bill Austin whilst performing the song
"Take A Chance On Me". You will love it and cry with laughter when
you see it for yourself.
|

 |
|
There are so many great scenes but
highlights for me include 'Donna and The Dynamo's' - Donna, Tanya
and Rosie - performing "Super Trouper" in lycra and sequin flared
jumpsuits complete with platform boots! A heartrending performance
by Donna of "The Winner Takes It All" and of course Tanya and the
boys performing the song "Does Your Mother Know" with Tanya
showing Pepper she is just too hot to handle! Ahmet Ahmet who is
Pepper is a cheeky chancer. He makes the role his own with charm,
wit and that cocky smile that he is forever flashing at Tanya. |
|
The only difference with the London
production and the Bristol production is the stage flooring. In
London it lights up, whether it be a disco, sand or sea. And a
'wooden' walkway rises up out the floor in the last scene. But that
makes no difference to the overall production of the show. The
storyline intricately woven with ABBA songs - 22 of them in fact! -
and is the must see show for the season. It will have you crying
with laughter and standing to your feet in appreciation. You will
end up clapping and dancing along to the finale that you just can't
help yourself. And finally you'll leave that theatre on a high,
although dancing down the street may get you the odd stare or two.
But I defy anyone to say .... it was ok. |
 |
This is a
brilliant afternoon or night out for all the family. Go and catch
it now because once the show ends it run in Bristol on the 2nd
February 2008 you'll only end up wanting to see it again in
London's West End. You'll be well and truly hooked.
