Live Review - The Coal Porters the Prom, Gloucester Road, Bristol  12/11/09  Review & photography by Hugh Padfield

I wasn’t really convinced about bluegrass music  before I saw this band, but  in fact they turned out to be terrific.  They possess great vocals, had great musicianship, and have real stage energy. The front man, an American,  is very funny, oozing loads of confidence.

The banjo player had lots of the flourishes that reminded me of Bela Fleck’s ‘picking’, he could do anything. The female violinist had great movement and added a barrel full of vim and vigour to the occasion.

None of the instruments were ‘miked up’, which was unusual for the Prom and consequently it was a fairly ‘quiet’ gig, the vocals were amplified  however.

The Coal Porters are regularly playing around Bristol and you should get to see them if you want to be entertained., a very fine band.
