I went to the Somerville club to play a couple of tunes at an open
mic evening. First problem, it isn't there. The Sat Nav knew the
postcode and we drove up & down the road.....nothing. Then we saw a
chap with a guitar so we asked him. It is a house outside & a club
inside! You go through the front door of a house and end up in a
huge room that is the club. It is like the TARDIS in two ways, the
internal size is one thing the other is the time displacement that
you travel through. It is like a 70's social club, it has strange
rules and everything! The open mic evenings are arranged by the
lovely Helen Ditchburn, they have a small PA and a small stage so
all you will need is an acoustic guitar or two. I saw quite a few
local musicians that I know at the club and I must say that this is
probably the friendliest event of this kind that I have attended.
You get everything here from poetry to acoustic rock.
So there you are, you really must get along to one of Helens open
mics either to play or just to soak up the friendly atmosphere and
listen to some eclectic music from some talented musicians.
