Scarlatti Tilt - CDReview - Gathering of the Haunted

By Fred - Bristol Rocks

The CD opens with an atmospheric heavily reverbed drum and weirdness intro bearing the title to the album Gathering of the Haunted into the first full Track – I was Only Five, the most instant track on the CD and a delightfully dreamy Drum, Bass and Piano ballad with quite simply beguiling and stirring Vocal from Daisy – a great start.

Next up is One Under, a real contrast, kicking off with distorted vocal,, dissonant guitars and stabbing Bass and Drums into a pleasing Eastern style dirge taking the listener back into the chorus, what next?

The Insect’s Party Is almost hymn like steadily building into a layered middle eight.  Whilst this is a finely crafted and catchy song with lovely melodic choral work; it is not for me as vocally stunning as the best on this album.

Next up is the eerie and gently strumming Something for the Crows, again a finely crafted and atmospheric folk song which reminds me of the mood of the original Wicker Man film.

Vettriano’s Muse is the next song which builds confidently on a repetitive Piano melody revealing a more forceful side of Daisy’s voice, which is equally impressive and full.

Another exhibition of fine vocal range and melody in a song which has contrasting dynamics throughout is Death of a Ladies’ Man.

To Wonder is to me the least interesting of those on offer here, but a good song all the same.

The Album closer is the anthemic Salvation, another strong song with a repeated, powerful, distorted middle section and ending; this must be a great live song to hear belting out!

An eminently listenable Album of well crafted Music performed with emotion and finesse.
