Well, what can I say about Reavers? (Presumably named after the lunatic bad guys from the much underrated Sci-Fi movie ‘Serenity’)

Firstly, they look like a rock band. No ‘Man from T-Max or Next ‘ for this lot. All long hair, beards and a singer with precision spiked hair…oh! And black, lots and lots of black. Secondly they sound like a rock band. From our perspective (at the back of the Louisiana propping up the bar) if we had to put them into a box they had shades of Faith No More’ and Offspring about them (although that might have something to do with the peroxide blond spiky hair).

The band clearly enjoy what they do, and the audience enjoyed it right back at them. Performing tight punchy songs that had obviously been well thought out and rehearsed, prog rock spectaculars with drum sticks held aloft in a heavy metal salute.

Mind you there’s not an ounce of pretentiousness in Reavers brand of rock & roll. There’s a real feeling that they take their music, but not themselves, very seriously indeed.

It is also very refreshing to find another band from South Bristol. Us Southers seem to be few and far between and gave a sense of a common unity.

For balance, I would say that it would have been good if Wayne the singer could have physically matched the energetic level of the music itself with a bit more sweat and aggression. He definitely is the ‘cool dude’ and wandered around the stage in a very laid back manner. I suppose I like my rockers to really ROCK. However, as I said, that is very much a matter of personal taste, and maybe the rest of the band can force feed him a couple of pints of Red Bull 10 minutes before they go on next time.

One major gripe had nothing to do with Reavers at all, in fact I thought they were very polite in not telling these particular offenders not to “shut the @***** up!”

The band that had performed before Reavers (NOT my band I hasten to add) had congregated in a corner and were chatting so loudly that even the sound engineer was having difficulty hearing over them. All I can say is that’s not really playing the game is it.   Reavers showed support and respect for both bands on stage before them and stayed and watched. We can all learn from the bad manners of the other lot (I won’t be unprofessional and name names).

However, all things a side. I really enjoyed Reavers and I look forward to seeing them again soon.
