Alex in the void CD Review |
|
By Steve - Bristol Rocks |
| |
Previously known as The Alex Harvest Band
this is Alex's latest project.
A collaboration of four musicians, Alex
(Rhythm Guitar & Vocals),
Shireen Hemmati (Vocals & Alto Sax),
Miggles (Bass) and Keef (drums).
It's almost impossible to categorise their particular musical genre.
The band themselves freely admit that their 'BAG' is a
cocktail of styles ranging from folk through country rock and funk
to hip hop. |
 |
|
 |
Alex lists a large range of influences from the
likes of Tom Waits,
Leonard Cohen, Steve Earle, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and hip hop
artists like De La Soul and The Pharcyde.
You can hear overtones of all these in their singwriting and I'm not
sure that it works.
Experimentation is what music has always been about so hats off to
them. |
The recording and production quality is well up to the standard you
would expect with today's technology. The vocal performances are
excellent as always.
Alex's 'DIE HARD' fans will probably embrace this project and
support him all the way but for me I preferred the old Alex Harvest,
I feel with this that it's trying too hard to be different and
resulted in a loss of direction, although, as a live set it may work
very well.
Sorry Mate ! |
